Mein vierter Monat
From now on, I will publish all of my blog entries in English, too! Just scroll down to the end of the German text.

My fourth month
By this time, 100 days in CR for me are over. I had made a "pact" with my organization EWN, that I will not give up during this time in any case. Ok, I have to admit, I really never thought about going home, but still I understand the "100 Days Pact", because after that time I really made friends and it feels kind of "home"... hard to explain, but maybe at the end of the blog you will understand!
The everyday life I have now made me thinking about whether I am really satisfied with everything as it is.
Matthi and Lena moved to a volunteer dorming room this month. In the beginning I felt kind of jealous, because now they belonged to the "cool ones". I noticed that I simply accepted some of Ana Ligia's habits, but wasn't happy with some of them. We kind of lived a bit past each other for a while, at least that's what I felt. So I asked her to talk a bit and we reflected our first time together. After a two and a half hours conversation I was quite satisfied. Since then we talk a lot at dinner and I am absolutely happy about living here! Ana's daughter Carolina, who lives in Switzerland, came to visit us. She brought chocolate, bread and Swiss cheese! Is it possible not beeing happy with that? Ana invited me to a family`s dinner, where we had "Olla de carne" (sin carne para mí) and I had a good time with Ana`s funny brother Oskar.
The work hadn`t changed a lot, I'm still waiting for more tasks and in a few lessons I'm really desperate doing nothing. I talked an other time to my mentor, the boss of the foundation. It looks like I will have some administrative tasks next year. I am looking forward to that, because I really like the foundation!
I have talked a lot with the orientation teacher, the "new" Karen, so I once again realized how the "muchachos" (young people) live outside the foundation. They work so hard, some of them live under for me unimaginable circumstances, pay off their uniforms for more than two years, sometimes eat only once a day properly (lunch at the Fundación)...what fascinates me most is the strength behind a girl who only finished primary school, lived on the street due to drug use and then motivated herself not to use any more drugs in order to apply for an apprendiceship at the Foundation. At the same time, she goes to school at night time to catch up on her graduation. All this, I didn't even notice at the beginning... I am happy that there are places like Samuel where young guys get a chance to study without paying.
On December 8th, the graduation, for which an enormous effort was made, of the generation 2017/2018 took place. Even the parking lots were repainted, whereby among other things Brandon had embellished his whole trousers with spots of paint. Seeing that, I just thought, oh yes, exactly the same would have happened to me! During our rehearsels we practiced full of motivation for our performance and became a really great group. When the day of the gig finally came, we all got ready together and put on matching clothes in black and wine red. I was very impressed by the moment when Daniel gave kind of a speech for us. Holding hands we stood in a circle to give each other strength. They even prayed together. I will never forget that! It was so emotional that some students cried a little.
Furthermore, we decorated the classrooms for Christmas, the "Conta class" performed plays on labour rights and in "Desarollo Personal" we worked on "Etiqueta y Protocolo", which means that we ate together and learned all kinds of table manners down to the last detail.
I have hardly made any more trips and spent a lot of time in San José, which shows that I feel at home in a certain way.
The first weekend of this month I was on a super exciting trip to the volcano Poás. We started our hike at 1 o'clock at night. After one kilometer, I have to admit that I was a bit pissed off, because we had to walk 2 kilometers over an extremely muddy cow pasture in the dark and I immediately had wet feet. But somehow our hatred for the cow pasture was so strong that it became pretty kind of funny! Later we went through various areas, meadows under the starry sky, a path in the dense rainforest, a path through knee-high plants with thick succulent leaves and finally the stone desert. It slowly became bright and smelled more and more like sulphur. In addition, there was more and more wind and it started to rain. I fell down a bit on a steep section, but immediately caught myself at a platform again. We learned that it is better to climb the section without backpacks. You can't really speak of a sunrise, because literally it was that foggy that day so you could barely see something. The guide mentioned about ten times that we would need only 15 minutes more to reach the crater. And yeah, finally we got there where supposed to be the crater. You could at least guess it😥 We started the way back fast, because there were still five hours to go on, prospecting that feels great if you are completely wet and frozen. But we did dry somehow! We descended through a stone desert, in which the stones appeared like stones, but simply broke away when you walked on them. We came to impressive waterfalls and somehow managed to finish the other 2km of cow pasture. 27km without seeing the crater! But we were very proud of ourselves 😎 There are still pieces of clothing left smelling like sulphur...
During the week I did a lot of small activities. After my last drawing lesson we made "Patacones" with the flatmates of my drawing-teacher Monica. With Frijoles Molidos and Guacamole they tasted unbelievably tasty! With Cabio and Hannah I went to a fancy café that has a whole wall full of board games, it is like paradise! We played "Escape", even dared to do it in Spanish, and unfortunately had to give up after two hours because we really couldn't finish the puzzles. That was a bit depressing... Hannah's organization organized an international dinner where volunteers from all over the world prepared finger food. I enjoyed Tiramisu from Italy and Apfelstudel from Austria! The guys from the volunteer flat share and I went to a roller-skating disco, it's similar to go ice-skating home in Germany, but with these type of roller-skates it was a bit different... I overestimated myself a little bit and wanted to go off like I did in inline skating...I layed down first :D Games to learn skating were organized on this day and when it came to the stop dance game I was inattentive, so I had to dance as a punishment with my friend Matthi in the middle of the hall in front of all the people (you surely can imagine that it is nice to dance, if you just learned to ride well!). It was very funny!
One night I had a fat "cucaracha" in my room and locked it in a glass at it would be a prison because I was afraid that I would have all the eggs in the carpet when I would smash it. IHHH! The next day I visited an insect museum and the owner, who I don't think gets that many visitors, was totally thrilled to tell a German girl all about Cucarachas. They belong to the cockroaches and there are so many different cockroaches, that's "unimaginable" and "really great"! In Asia there are many medicines for which cockroaches are bred. In addition, cameras are put on the cockroaches` backs and by stimulating their nerves they can be steered remotely into houses which are destroyed by earthquakes. I am rather thinking about steering it into my little brother's room when I return to Germany...
I went to a very impressive drama play prepared by some students from the university. They performed short plays of about 5 minutes in a row and you were completely drawn into each of them. They treated pretty brutal, psychologically stressful subjects and I was astonished how openly and realistically the actors could present it. Sex scenes, mental illnesses on stage? It's really not easy, I guess.
I spent a real girls` weekend with Lena. On Saturday we went shopping and to the hairdresser. Oops, after that I somehow didn't have any hair anymore, I was really shocked at first, but actually it was quite cool after all.
On Sunday we spent a relaxing day in Jacó on the beach. Our good friend Mariam had overslept so she couldn`t come with us. This time, there weren`t any crocodiles and the sea had a really nice turquoise colour! Where the river leads into the sea one can bathe like in a pool. Except for the really annoying chat-up lines turn of many men on this day we had a super nice sunny day!
An absolute highlight of this month was the invitation from the German ambassador. Many volunteers came to the German residence, where took place a wonderful garden party. I felt like I was in a movie when I drove up the illuminated driveway in our Uber (after we were caught by the guard at the entrance gate of the residence sitting squeezed together with four persons in the back seat of our Uber). Hannah and I couldn't believe our eyes when we discovered the huge buffet with potato salad and a lot of Christmas desserts! The ambassador spoke personally with us and turned out to be a super open and friendly woman. It was a super nice evening!
Well, finally I get to my Christmas feelings here in CR. Yeah, llegó la navidad, besides the summer temperatures!
The houses are exaggeratedly decorated with chains of lights, red noses and antlers are attached to the cars, Burgerking has put up a terrible, huge Christmas tree with a Burgerking crown, at "Plaza de la Cultura" there are installed big presents of colorful light tubes (check the cover picture), we decorated our house and my room, Carolina, Ana's daughter, also brought some decoration from Switzerland, and Ana walks around here at home in Christmas aprons. At the shared flat of the volunteers we organised a big Christmas baking party. It worked more or less to do christmas cookies with 20 people :D Before, we went to a Christmas market of the Humboldt School and watched children singing in the choir while drinking coffee and eating cookies like the grannies do. When "Jingle Bell Rock" turned on we totally went out of our way and probably stood out from the grannies!
Don't freeze to death at home in Germany, merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
